The Cocktail Hour

Due to one of the cast members suffering a serious health concern this past week, Great Escape Stage Company is postponing this production. Instead, it will be rescheduled for six performances September 9-11 and 16-18 and will also feature a cabaret performance of musical guests after each performance.

Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award as Best Off-Broadway Play in 1988

The show will be performed in the formal garden at Stonehall, home of Charles Lang and Sandy Tartaglia, located at 303 N. Kalamazoo in Marshall (map).

An aspiring playwright goes home to visit his aging WASP parents, primarily to seek permission to get his play (called The Cocktail Hour) produced. Inspired by their secretly dysfunctional family, the son believes the truth will be healing and therapeutic – the parents think it will be devastating and disastrous.

By the author of Love Letters and The Dining Room, A.R. Gurney’s The Cocktail Hour is a witty examination of an overprivileged family that fights domestic battles while downing drinks. It makes for a deliciously funny and also occasionally touching evening, as Gurney’s family sits around raking over old coals and settling old scores, with surprising warmth and humor, during the ritual of the cocktail hour.
